The Department of Ibero-Romance Linguistics and Comparative Romance Linguistics
of the Ghent University and the Instituto Camões will organize a workshop on
Portuguese contrastive linguistics and sociolinguistics, on November 17th-18th
2008.

Call for Papers

The Portuguese language has been exposed to diverse contacts, due to its
particular historical, geographical and political situation. The resulting
diversification is apparent at the intercontinental, international, national and
local level. Obvious examples are the European, Brazilian and African Portuguese
variants. On another level, Portugal has changed from an emigrating society into
an immigrating one in the last few decades, motivating new situations of
language contact. Therefore, Portuguese, as a language in contrast with other
languages, can be studied in various domains:

- Comparison of the European, Brazilian and African varieties
- Linguistic fixation and standardization (cf. orthographic norms, language
politics, etc.)
- Linguistic minorities of the Lusophone world
- Language contact inside the Lusophone area 
- Evolution of Portuguese contrasted with other (Ibero-)Romance languages
- Contrastive syntactic, semantic and/or pragmatic analysis of Portuguese
compared to other (Ibero-)Romance languages 

Interested researchers are invited to present their work relating to the
above-mentioned study domains. 

Papers can be presented in Portuguese, Spanish, French or English. The talks
will be about 20 minutes (plus 10 minutes of discussion). Abstracts should be
about 300-400 words long and must be submitted as an attached file to the
following e-mail address, before August 15th 2008: PCC at UGent.be, mentioning the
name(s) of the author(s), abstract title, postal address, e-mail and telephone
number.

Second Call for Papers

The Department of Linguistics at Simon Fraser University is pleased to invite
abstracts for submission to the 2nd International Conference on East Asian
Linguistics (ICEAL2) to be held at the Harbour Centre campus of Simon Fraser
University, November 7-9, 2008. 

Invited Speakers:
- Ping Li (Psychology, Richmond)
- Maria Polinsky (Linguistics, Harvard)
- Satosh Tomioka (Linguistics, Delaware)
- Lindsay J. Whaley (Linguistics and Cognitive Science, Dartmouth College)

Topics:
Abstracts are invited for oral presentations (20 minute talk with 10 minute
discussion) or posters on all aspects of linguistics of Chinese, Korean,
Japanese, and other languages spoken in East Asia, including: syntax, semantics,
morphology, phonology, phonetics, pragmatics, first and second language
acquisition, neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, and
language variation and change. In addition to regular conference sessions, there
will be a special session on Experimental Approaches in East Asian Linguistics.
There will be an award of a modest sum for the best student abstract.

Instructions for Abstract Submission: 
Abstracts are not to exceed one page in letter-size (8.5''x 11'') paper with 1''
margins on all sides and 12pt font size, with an optional additional page for
data and references. The abstract should have a clear title but should not
identify the author(s). 

The abstract must be submitted electronically in PDF format, using the
electronic submission website accessible from:

Submissions are limited to 1 individual and 1 joint abstract per author, or 2
joint abstracts per author.
