The Rice Linguistics Society is pleased to announce its 3rd Biennial Meeting in
Houston Texas February 21-22, 2009. 

Call for Papers

This graduate student-run conference aims to bring together a variety of
researchers while focusing on providing a supportive environment for those still
working on their degrees, or who have recently finished their degrees. The theme
for this year's meeting is Theoretical Contributions from Less-Commonly-Studied
Languages and Language Varieties.  In addition to paper presentations, we will
also be hosting a panel discussion on the Role of Theory in Language
Description.  While contributions from all subfields of linguistics are welcome,
we are especially seeking contributions from researchers whose work involves
less-commonly-studied language and language varieties, including (but not
limited to) fieldworkers, sociolinguists, phoneticians, syntacticians, and
discourse-researchers.

Submission Information 
Papers should describe original work.  While we encourage submissions related to
our conference theme, papers on any subfield of linguistics are also welcome. 
Please send abstracts of no more than 500 words in .pdf or .doc format to
rls at rice.edu by December 20th.  The paper should not include the authors' names
and affiliations.  Furthermore, self-citations and other references that could
reveal the author's identity should be avoided. Any questions regarding
submissions should also be directed to rls at rice.edu.  

Important Dates

Acceptance notification sent: 9 January 2009

We are pleased to announce the Fourth Newcastle Postgraduate Conference in
Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. 

Call for Papers

We invite postgraduate students to submit abstracts for oral and poster
presentations on any area of linguistics, theoretical or applied (see below for
abstract submission guidelines).  

This one-day conference is designed to give linguistics postgraduates from all
research areas an opportunity to present and discuss their research in an
informal and intellectually stimulating setting. In addition to two invited
speakers (tbc), this year's conference also includes a methodology workshop led
by Professor Zoltán Dörnyei (University of Nottingham).

The conference takes place at Newcastle University on Friday 27th March, 2009,
in the Percy Building, Newcastle University, with a conference dinner in the
evening.

Key Dates
Deadline for submission of abstracts: 3rd January, 2009 
Notification of acceptance: early February, 2009
Pre-registration (for reduced rate): 1st March, 2009

Abstract Submission Guidelines
Abstract submission guidelines are available at
conferences.ncl.ac.uk/pglinguistics. Abstracts should be sent to
pgconfling at ncl.ac.uk. Email submissions only, please (Microsoft Word/PDF format
only).

Presentation Guidelines
Accepted abstracts will be allotted 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes
for discussion. There will be a dedicated poster session on the day of the
conference. Speakers will also be invited to submit their paper for publication
in the Newcastle Working Papers in Linguistics.
