Description:

Position as Ph.D. fellow (Doctoral scholarship, duration 3 years - SKO 1017)
available in the project PROIEL - Pragmatic Resources in Old Indo-European
Languages, Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas,
University of Oslo.

PROIEL is a project funded by the Norwegian Research Council's YFF program.
Activities started officially on January 1st, 2008. Its principal goal is to
achieve a better understanding of the way information is structured by means the
grammar makes available ('pragmatic resources') in the old Indo-European
languages Greek, Latin, Classical Armenian, Gothic and Old Church Slavonic. To
this end we are developing a parallel treebank of the New Testament texts in
these languages.

We are looking for a Ph.D. fellow to participate in the project. The candidate
will write a dissertation relevant to the project, either adopting a
computational approach to the PROIEL corpus or performing an empirical and
theoretical investigation of the syntactic and pragmatic systems of one or more
of the involved languages. Those interested in applying should contact the
project leader to discuss possible subprojects.

The candidate will be expected to have his/her work place in Oslo and to
participate in the various workshops and conferences organized as part of the
PROIEL team. An important part of the project is the establishment of an
electronic parallel corpus of the relevant Bible translations. The candidate
will be expected to devote some of his/her time to this work.

The ideal candidate should have knowledge of Greek and at least one of the
involved languages and be interested in applying modern computational and/or
theoretical approaches to ancient languages. In choosing the candidate we will
also try to balance the linguistic competence in the team. A Master's degree is
necessary to be enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the Faculty of Arts.

Pay grade: 45-50 (depending on seniority/qualifications, NOK 353 200 - NOK 384

2.  A research proposal (of up to 2.500 words in English), which gives
information about what questions the applicant hopes to answer in his/her
doctoral dissertation, and explains how these questions fit into PROIEL.
3. One piece of sample work (of up to 5.000 words).
4. Names and addresses of up to two references.
