Description:

Within the Department of Communication and Information Sciences at Tilburg
University, we are looking for two new enthusiastic and competent Ph.D. colleagues:

Ph.D.-student (1) m/f
Vacancy number 500.08.26, 3 or 4 years, 1.0 fte

Ph.D.-student (2) m/f
Vacancy number 500.08.27, 4 years, 1.0 fte

Ph.D.-student 1 will be appointed on the project entitled "Producer vs.
addressee oriented processes in producing referring expressions". The project is
part of the study of referring expressions in human communication, an area which
is covered in different research projects in the Department of Communication and
Information Sciences. This project in particular intends to offer further
explanation of how the production of referring expressions, viewed as a
multimodal phenomenon, is shaped by both audience design considerations and
cognitive constraints on the part of the speaker.

Ph.D.-student 2 will be appointed on the project "Visual metaphor: a
Psycholinguistic Perspective" (in particular subproject 3), funded by an 'Open
Competition' grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research
(NWO), a project in which Tilburg University, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and
Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen cooperate. The overarching goal of the project is
to exploit the vast psycholinguistic expertise on metaphor in language for the
study of the identification, description, and process modelling of metaphor in
visuals. Ask for the complete project description

Requirements:
For both positions, we seek a candidate with a background in psycholinguistics,
communication & information sciences, social sciences or some related area, with
experience in doing experiments, and (depending on the project) a proven
interest in one or more of the following area's: speech or writing production,
discourse reference, multimodal reference, audience design, visual perception,
multimodal communication, metaphor theory.

The Ph.D. candidates have a (research) master degree in one of the
aforementioned areas, a strong interest in doing research, excellent writing
skills and a good command of English. Developing and defending a project plan
within the research area of the project will be part of the procedure.

Terms of employment:
The Ph.D. candidates will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system
(UFO) as a Ph.D.-student (promovendus) with a starting salary of minimally €
2.000.-- gross per month in the first year, up to € 2.441.-- in the third year
or € 2.558.-- in the fourth year (amounts fulltime).
The selected candidate is expected to have written a Ph.D. thesis by the end of
the contract (which may be based on articles).
