Lukas D. Tsitsipis, Professor of Anthropology and Linguistics at the
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) passed away on Sunday, 14
September.  Born in Athens in 1946, he obtained a PhD in Anthropology from
the University of Wisconsin, after completing two masters' degrees, one in
anthropology and one in linguistics, at the same University (1981). He has
written 'A Linguistic Anthropology of Praxis and Language Shift: Arvanitika
(Albanian) and Greek in Contact' (Clarendon Press, Oxford 1998) and two
books in Greek: 'An Introduction to the Anthropology of Language: Language,
Ideology and Performance' (Gutenberg, Athens 1995) and 'From Language as an
Object to Language as Action' (Nissos, Athens 2005), while a book under the
title 'Language, Praxis, and Ideology: A Dynamic Approach to
Sociolinguistic Processes' was in progress at the time of his death under
contract with Palgrave Macmillan. 

He had extensively published in journals such as Word, Language in Society,
Journal of Pragmatics, Semiotica, International Journal of the Sociology of
Language, Anthropological Linguistics, Journal of Sociolinguistics, Journal
of Linguistic Anthropology, Pragmatics etc. on such issues as linguistic
ideologies, political theory and language, the performative aspects of
language, social action theories and anthropological linguistics. A member
of several Greek and international societies (including the American
Anthropological Association, the International Pragmatics Association and
LSA), he was a pioneer in the study of minority languages in Greek,
language contact and language death. 

Lukas will be fondly remembered by all his colleagues and friends in Greece
and abroad. We will dearly miss his vivacity and brilliance, his
intellectual openness and integrity and his unique wit.
