Call for Papers

Round Table:
"The Languages of the Body and the Soul: Narratives, Multimodality, and Embodiment"

In his _Varieties of Religious Experience_ (1902), William James described one
of the characteristics of mystical experience as being that of "ineffability",
or the sense of inefficacy of language to describe spiritual experiences.
Despite this fact, humans effectively do communicate these phenomena in a
variety of ways, using such cognitive processes and linguistic instruments as
categories, metaphors and metonymies, images, and other figurative language.

This round table wishes to investigate the cognitive-semiotic processes and
products of human communication within the realm of religious and spiritual
discourse, whether it be in written literature, oral narratives, gestures, film,
or other means of multimodal representations, particularly in relationship to
the concept of embodiment, as described by cognitive linguistics and psychology.

Proposals in English or Spanish (max. 500 words, figures and references apart)
must be submitted to Vito Evola <evola at berkeley.edu> in RTF, DOC or PDF format
no later than October 20th, 2008. Authors will be contacted by the end of
October with regards to the acceptance or rejection of their proposals for the
round table. There will be the possibility of contributing an extended version
of the submissions (approx. 2500 words, references included) in the Conference
Proceedings book.

Important: Both the round table proposal and the individual contributions will
undergo independent reviewing by the AESLA program committee. If a proposal has
not been accepted for the round table, it may be submitted later for the general
sessions.

The fourth PaPI Conference will be hosted by the University of Las Palmas de
Gran Canaria, Spain, from 17 to 18 June, 2009. Phonetics and Phonology in Iberia
(PaPI) is an international conference aiming to bring together researchers
interested in all areas of phonetics and phonology, with a special focus on the
relationship between the two.

The Conference aims at providing an interdisciplinary forum in Europe for
discussion of phonetics and/or phonology and their related areas- such as
language acquisition, language variation and change, speech pathology, and
speech technology, the phonology-phonetics interface, and laboratory phonology
work. 

Call for Papers

The Conference is hosted every two years by an Iberian university. The PaPI 2009
conference format will be the following: a two-day meeting including four oral
sessions of 20 minute presentations (plus 10 minute discussion) of submitted
papers, poster sessions, and two invited talks. The invited speakers of PaPI
2009 will be John Harris (University College London) and Martine Grice
(University of Cologne).
Following the main conference, two parallel workshops will be held.
