Meeting Description:
As a follow-up of the successful ESF workshop with the same title (held in
November 2007), we again would like to bring together a group of outstanding
invited speakers and discussants to explore directions for future research in
the multidisciplinary field of computational modeling of language evolution,
processing, and acquisition.
We envisage bringing together a group of maximally 50 researchers from
different disciplines who take an interest in investigating language
acquisition and processing. The focus is on computational models that enhance
our understanding of behavioural phenomena and results of experiments.
A pervasive problem in the multi-disciplinary field of language processing and
acquisition is that different disciplines not only favour and exploit different
experimental paradigms, but also quite different publication styles and
different journals. As a result, information flow across the borders of the
disciplines is no more than a trickle, where broad streams would be desirable.
We have designed a programme in which there is room for four or five longer
presentations by invited speakers. A team of discussants from a range of
disciplines will give comment.
Prospective participants are invited to send an expression of interest to the
organizers before June 20. In selecting participants priority will be given to
scientists who submit a position statement with their expression of interest.
The statement should address the topics of the workshop. It should be in the
Interspeech-2009 format with a maximum of four pages (shorter statements are
also welcome).
Workshop participants will receive key papers by the speakers and discussants,
as well as the full set of position statements on August 15.
During the workshop, there will be ample time and opportunity for all
participants to contribute to the discussions.
The workshop should result in sketch of future research in language evolution,
acquisition and processing during the next five to ten years. To that end the
workshop will explore the formation of consortia that can prepare project
proposals for EU-funded programmes such as FET, etc. For this reason we have
also invited representatives of the major European funding agencies. Finally,
the workshop will explore the feasibility of forming a couple of small
interdisciplinary teams to prepare papers for journals in a number of disciplines.
Costs: The price for participants is 70 UK pounds; this includes all
preparatory materials and a lunch.
All payments must be made in cash at the workshop venue.

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $60,000. This money will go to help
keep the List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.
See below for donation instructions, and don't forget to check out our Fund Drive
2009 LINGUIST List Restaurant and join us for a delightful treat!

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!
You can donate right now using our secure credit card form at

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later. To do so, go to:

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to
donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such
can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non
Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be
offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers
only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
