Description:
The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Director for the Robert Henderson
Language Media Center (RHLMC). This is a non-tenure-stream 12-month faculty
position in the Department of Linguistics. The start date is July 1, 2009.
Duties include:
1. Facilitating and supporting the use of technology for language
instruction throughout the university by working with language instructors
and coordinators;
2. Setting policies for the efficient use and management of RHLMC facilities;
3. Ensuring that the RHLMC technology is kept current, and determine
whether, when, and how new technologies should be implemented;
4. Working in close collaboration with the RHLMC manager, who is in charge
of day-to-day operations in the RHLMC, to ensure the smooth functioning of
the facility;
5. Planning and managing yearly budgets for personnel, equipment, and services;
6. Promoting the effective use of language learning technology through
outreach and training;
7. To the extent possible, expanding RHLMC services and capacities through
the development of outside funds through both internal and external grants;
8. Teach one course per semester in the spring and fall semesters in the
Department of Linguistics.
The RHLMC consists of two computer classrooms networked to a server, a
recording studio, and extensive language learning technology resources. See

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in instructional technology and
design, foreign language teaching, or second language acquisition/applied
linguistics with a concentration in technological applications to language
learning.
Candidates for this position must have excellent communication and
interpersonal skills. Experience managing a similar facility is desirable,
but not required. Candidates must be knowledgeable in all major computer
platforms. A knowledge of networking technology, digital sound and video
processing software, web applications, or streaming technology is also
desirable. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated excellence in
classroom teaching at the university level.
