My name is Brannon Bradford.  I am a Masters student in Linguistics at the
University of Texas at El Paso.  I am putting together a thesis proposal,
looking at colloquial speech and slang on Second Language Acquisition.

I believe colloquial speech and slang are usually hard to acquire by second
language learners. I have found some research claiming that group
membership is the key factor that hinders L2 learners from using slang.
However, I want to explore if there are other pragmatic factors that
account for the difficulty in acquiring this type of speech, i.e. a lack of
conceptualization of the words. Often slang and colloquialisms cannot be
translated.

I am currently looking for research on this topic and would appreciate any
suggestions on bibliography on second language acquisition of colloquialism
and slang. I have already consulted the university library and searched
several databases.  I am looking for research in all language.  Some
examples of helpful articles and books I have found are as follows:

McAlpine, Janice and Hai Xu.  "Anglophone, Peewee, Two-four?Are
Canadianisms Acquired by ESL learners in Canada?".  TESL Canada Journal.
