Meeting Description:

Dictionaries, grammars and language manuals in general have always played a role
in the standardisation process. Such works may describe usage but also prescribe
rules. Recent research has demonstrated that 'prescriptivism' is not confined to
the eighteenth century. Despite the author's 'descriptive' intentions Jones's
English Pronouncing Dictionary (1917) reified RP as the standard both for native
speakers and learners of English, and there is still a market for texts which
provide prescriptive guides to 'correct' and 'proper' pronunciation'. This
seminar invites papers that examine the way pronouncing dictionaries over the
centuries have prescribed norms for the pronunciation of English. 

Call for Papers

Proposals are invited for papers to be presented at Seminar 58, ESSE, on
Prescriptivism and Pronouncing Dictionaries: Past and Present. Papers will be
circulated to panel participants before the conference and 15-minute summaries
given at the seminar. Please submit proposals to Joan Beal (j.c.beal at shef.ac.uk)
