Dissertation Abstract:

The thesis is devoted to the Lexical base of the Ukrainian language (LBUL)
as well as to its intra- and inter-lexeme, intra- and inter-group
relation's description. The quantitative and qualitative results obtained
in the work allow for a deeper understanding of the lexical-semantic
phenomena in the system of Ukrainian language vocabulary. 

The main result of the work is the elaboration of an original method for
LBUL selection and its practical realization. Its main criteria are
frequency and functional style prevalence following the world experience.
The first-range vocabulary from frequency dictionaries (FD) of the
colloquial, belles-lettres, journalistic, scientific and official styles
was compared. In this way LBUL consists of 1386 units.

The facts showing the correctness of the LBUL selection are as follows:
the total corpus size the LBUL was selected from is 1,700,000 word
occurrences; all the five main functional styles are presented in the corpus;
the FDs are compiled accordingly to the same rules, so they can be 
compared; similarity of the rank-frequency behaviour for all the five
functional style FDs and the same dependence for British National Corpus;
correlation between the main frequency characteristics (the number of
different words and word-forms in the respective dictionaries; variety,
exclusiveness and concentration indices of the text and the vocabulary) for
five functional styles.
Three thousand of the most frequent words in five FDs cover from 77.97% of
text in the journalistic style to 86.09% of text in the colloquial style,
therefore, this very number of words in all FDs was compared to reveal the
total frequency of a particular lexeme.

The main practical result of the work is the formalization of comparison of
mentioned FDs by means of the elaborated computer program. It fixes the
frequency of each word in the specific dictionary in the form of electronic
worksheet, providing also for the possibility to sort the list with respect
to alphabetic order or frequency, both ascending and descending. The
program can be applied for the frequency calculation in the case of other
text corpora. 

The system-structure organization of LBUL composition has peculiarities on
different levels. Namely, 33% of the words are polysemic, over one-half of
LBUL units are inter-connected by different inter-lexeme links: synonymy
(25%), hypero-hyponymy (10%), conversion (6.7%), antonymy (about 5%),
partonymo-holonymy (5.5%), other types (about 2.8%). Polysemy, antonymy,
conversion, hyperonymy, and partonymo-holonymy appear also as means of
inter- and intra-group connections.

The selected 16 inter-part-of-speech groups in LBUL cover in general all
the most important fields of reality; they correlate with the general
onomasiological scheme obtained as a result of the comparison of synoptic
schemes on the basis of ten languages thesauri. This fact gives a
possibility to consider LBUL as a compressed lexical level of the Ukrainian
language.
The various oppositions characterize the semantic continuum of LBUL and
partition it. The high level of the lexeme connections is revealed; such a
classification discovers the words requiring identical lexicographic
qualification.

The results of the present study can be used when compiling the explanatory
and ideographical dictionaries of modern Ukrainian language, when writing
manuals for teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language, as well as in the
courses on semasiology, applied, statistical, and computer linguistics.
