ESSE 10 conference - Turin, Italy, 24-28 August 2010
Call for Papers
New approaches to Shakespeare's language and style
We invite papers for seminar 12 on Shakespeare's language and style at the tenth
international conference of ESSE (The European Society for the Study of English):
Shakespeare had a lifelong interest in exploiting the mechanics of language, as
is evidenced by the adroit linguistic manipulations displayed in his works, and
his own uses of language still intrigue and baffle us today. The current revived
interest in his language and style and new tools of investigation allow us to
probe further into his production and offer innovative insights bridging the gap
between linguists and literary scholars. This seminar will take a particular
interest in such cutting-edge approaches as corpus stylistics and cognitive
stylistics, but also aims at showing that there can be new life in more
traditional approaches (rhetoric, poetics, pragmatics, etc.).
Please send a 200-word abstract of the proposed paper directly to both convenors
of the seminar before 31 January 2010:
Mireille Ravassat (University of Valenciennes, FR): mireilleravassat at yahoo.fr
Jonathan Culpeper (Lancaster University, UK) : j.culpeper at lancaster.ac.uk
The convenors will let the proponents know whether their proposals have been
accepted no later than 28 February 2010.
