Dissertation Abstract:

This dissertation describes in a formal way the various systems expressing
tense and aspect in standard Indonesian, and brings to the fore the
interactions between these systems. In Indonesian, tense and aspect are
expressed by a wealth of morphemes. Three systems coexist, and in some
cases interfere : lexical affixes, inter-processual links and aspect
markers. Some lexical affixes indicate whether the process is bounded.
Processes can be linked to each other as a series of chronological events
and/or with a shared location in time. The category of aspect markers
consists of fourteen morphemes pre-posed to the verb. Within the scope of
the 'Théorie des Opérations Enonciatives' (Theory of Utterance Operations),
we deal with the aspectualization operations and the surface forms of tense
and aspect, as well as modality when applicable. Emphasis is laid on the
analysis of aspect markers, including their possible combinations.
