The University of Rouen will be organizing an International Conference on Final
Particles on 27-28 May 2010 (FiPa2010). 

Plenary Speakers: 
Dagmar Barth-Weingarten (University of Mannheim); 
Bernd Heine (University of Köln); 
Jacques Moeschler (University of Geneva); 
Sung-Ock Sohn (UCLA)

The purpose of the conference is to shed new light on final particles.

Sentence-final adverbials in English are traditionally associated with
VP-oriented adjuncts, especially manner, time and space adverbials, whereas the
presence of clause-oriented adverbials is said to be rare and even problematic
in such a position. But the examination of recent spoken English corpora has
shown that they are attested in various dialects of English, such as American
English, Australian English, Southern British English and Geordie English, to
name a few. 

Even though it is still an emerging process in English, and more generally in
Germanic languages, along with Romance languages, compared to the use of these
particles in Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean, this
phenomenon is worth exploring since it contributes to discourse coherence and
cohesion and it partakes of linguistic creativity in language. 

Call for Papers

The purpose of this conference is to gather original research papers on
sentence-final particles in various types of language. 

A special attention will be devoted to the analysis of these adverbials in
relation, but not exclusively, to the following topics :

- Grammaticalization theory 
- Information structure theory 
- Construction grammar
- Relevance theory
- Conversational analysis
- Iconicity
- Language contact
- Prosodic and phonetic features
- Sociolinguistic criteria
- Affect (attitudes and emotions)

Time for Papers: 
20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for questions.

English and French

Abstracts should be anonymous and no more than one side of A4. They should be
sent to the following address in PDF format: smhttiki at hotmail.com

Le but de la conférence est d'apporter un éclairage nouveau sur les particules
finales.

Les adverbes de phrase en anglais sont traditionnellement associés à des «
adjuncts » de verbe, spécialement des adverbes de manière, de temps et d'espace,
tandis que la présence d'adverbes de phrase sont, semble-t-il, rares ou même
problématiques dans une telle position. Mais l'examen de corpus récents en
anglais parlé a montré qu'ils sont attestés dans des dialectes variés de
l'anglais, comme l'anglais américain, l'anglais australien, l'anglais du sud de
l'Angleterre et l'anglais de Newcastle, pour n'en citer que quelques-uns.
Même si c'est encore un processus émergent en anglais, et plus généralement dans
les langues germaniques, mais aussi dans les languages romanes, comparé à
l'emploi de ces particules dans les langues asiatiques comme le chinois, le
japonais et le coréen, ce phénomène est intéressant à explorer car il contribue
à la cohérence et à la cohésion du discours et il participe de la créativité
linguistique de la langue.

Le but de cette conférence est de rassembler des recherches originales sur les
particules finales dans des types variés de langues.

Une attention toute particulière sera attribuée à l'analyse de ces adverbes en
relation, mais pas exclusivement, avec les thèmes suivants :

- Théorie de la grammaticalisation
- Théorie de la structure informationnelle
- Grammaire de construction
- Théorie de la Pertinence
- Analyse de la Conversation
- Iconicité
- Contact linguistique
- Traits prosodiques et phonétiques
- Critères sociolinguistiques
- Affect (Attitudes et émotions)

Présentations orales de 20 minutes, suivies de 10 minutes de discussions.
Les communications pourront se faire en anglais ou en français.
