Query for this summary posted in LINGUIST Issue: 20.2194
Dear colleagues,
About two weeks ago, I posted a query on this list about language used as a
diagnostic criterion for psychosis, especially schizophrenia. I would like
to thank the following people for their helpful replies:
Lilian Atanga, Mike Baynham, Line Brandt, Per Aage Brandt, David Brown,
Stuart Calder, Michael Covington, Trevor Crawford, Zsofia Demjen, Joachim
Diederich, Denis Donovan, Katrin Erk, Jonathan Fine, Tess Fitzpatrick,
Becky Fortgang, Anna Glazier, David Hanauer, Kevin Harvey, Eliza Kitis,
Andrea Marini, Sophia Marmaridou, Paul Meara, Aaron Nitzkin, Charlotte
Petersen, John Racine, Brian Richards, Celia Roberts, Antonia Rothmayr,
Mick Short, Yisrael Smith, Andre L. Souza, Jane Sunderland, Geoff
Thompson, Simon Williams, Andrew Wilson, Gloria Zeligman.
I have been quite overwhelmed by the response, and the subsequent
preliminary bibliography has turned out to be so long that I have posted it
on my website rather than making this email overly long:

My recent research interest in this area is on the use of metaphor and
metonymy in the speech of people reporting complaints that are associated
with schizophrenia. More particularly, I am interested in how the use of
conceptual metaphor and metonymy is drawn upon as a criterion to issue a
diagnosis of schizophrenia. At this point, I am hoping to do a
meta-analytical study of metaphoric and metonymic expressions in the speech
and writing of people diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Many thanks for all the responses. If you look at the bibliography and
discover any blatant omissions or inadequacies, please let me know.
Best regards,
Veronika Koller
