We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Dear linguists,

We are currently developing a software programme that will allow the
automatic tagging of transcriptions of sociolinguistic interviews, word
lists, reading passages or any other written data for the standard lexical
sets and also for consonant variables. The software is currently in alpha
stage and consists mainly of lists of words compiled for different
varieties of English by ourselves, however we will be integrating data from
pronouncing dictionaries for RP (and possibly GA) in the following step. We
aim to build a database of words that also takes into account syllable
stress and phonological environment. This database would then be made
available for interested colleagues on the internet.

There do not seem to be any such lists available on the internet but we are
sure that many of you have compiled similar lists to ours and we would very
much appreciate your contribution to this project.

If you have any lists of words that are categorised by lexical set, vowel
or consonant variable for any variety of English we would be happy to hear
from you.

Thank you very much.
