Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Leipzig offers a
research position in the  project 'The internal structure of person
portmanteaus', funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation). The position
starts July 1, 2009 (or later) and lasts three years. The position can be
filled either by a Ph.D. student (German pay-scale TVL-E13/2,) or by a
post-doctoral researcher (German pay-scale TVL-E13). Candidates applying as
Ph.D. students must have an M.A. in hand and are expected to carry out
research for their dissertation in the project. All applicants should have
expertise in theoretical linguistics, especially morphological theory, an
open mind for typology and diachrony, and should be attracted by the idea
to analyze data from a great variety of typologically diverse languages.

Project description: 

The goal of the project is the typological and formal study of person
portmanteaus, i.e. grammatical formatives which express pronominal features
of subject and object at the same time. Especially we want to investigate
the following closely related questions: 1) Are there systematic
restrictions on the location of portmanteaus in inflectional paradigms? 2)
To which extent are portmanteaus analyzable? 3) What is the formal
representation of portmanteaus? 4) What is the extent and distribution of
portmanteau microvariation within groups of closely related languages? 5)
How do portmanteaus develop historically (and how do they disappear)? 

To answer these questions, we combine methods from typology, formal
morphology, and historical reconstruction. Apart from constructing a
cross-linguistic typological database for person portmanteaus to extract
general properties, we focus on the behavior of portmanteaus in three
small-scale language families (Nilotic, Iroquoian, and Uralic). For these
languages we will provide in-depth formal analyses of the relevant person
portmanteaus, investigate the range of microvariation in the families, and
attempt to reconstruct the diachronic development of person portmanteaus on
the background of the overall pronominal cross-referencing systems. 

The project is part of the DFG-research group 742 'The Grammar and
Processing of Verbal Arguments' (http://www.uni-leipzig.de/~va/) and is
conducted by Michael Cysouw  (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary
Anthropology, Leipzig)  and Jochen Trommer (University of Leipzig).
