The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU)
Department: Dep. of Language and Communication Studies
Job Location: Trondheim, Norway
Web Address: http://www.ntnu.no/
Job Rank: Programmer
Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Phonetics
Description:
A full-time position for an Electronics Engineer is available at the
Department of Language and Communication Studies, Faculty of Arts,
Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
The Department consists of 5 sections: Phonetics, Linguistics,
Communication Studies, Swahili and Norwegian as 2nd Language, with
altogether 30 permanent and temporary employees. Especially in Phonetics
and Linguistics the Department has developed valuable software and
electronic infrastructure, and needs a person who is interested in software
development and maintenance related to Natural Language Processing.
The Department has four laboratories: a phonetics lab, a computational
linguistics lab, a multimedia lab, and a language lab. One more language
lab is being planned. The Department also has servers running on Linux.
Servers and computational labs are run in cooperation with the Faculty's
IT-section, and the successful candidate will work in close cooperation
with the IT-section.
The tasks will be related to the daily working and maintenance of labs and
servers, and to maintenance, and to some extent development, of linguistic
and phonetic software. User support in discipline-related matters for the
Department's staff is also part of the work duties.
The ideal candidate will have good Linux competence, and some programming
skills. Competence in audio, studio recording, microphones etc. is also
necessary, as is competence in Windows, elementary video editing and simple
soldering. The Department uses web applications (apache, php, java),
databases (MySQL, Postgres) and XML technology.
Minimum education required will be technical college or education within a
relevant area (of 2-3 years beyond upper secondary school). In special
cases, lack of formal qualifications can be compensated by relevant working
background or further education.
Further information about the position can be obtained from Professor Lars
Hellan (see contact information below).
The position is remunerated according to salary levels 36 to 56 on the
Norwegian State salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 308 300 to NOK 428
100 a year. There will be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service
Pension Fund from gross salary.
The appointment will be made in accordance with the regulations in force
concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The work force within the
public sector should reflect the population at large. Thus, an important
aim within personnel policy is to achieve a balanced composition of staff
members, as well as recruit people from minority backgrounds. People from
minority backgrounds are therefore encouraged to apply to this position.
Women are also encouraged to apply, as it is a major political objective to
achieve a balance of gender in the national labour force.
You will have the opportunity to have your name kept from public access. If
you require this, you must give information about why this is important.
Even if you request this, the matter will be considered in relation to the
Freedom of Information Act, Section 25. If your name is not to be kept from
public access, you will be informed and get the chance to withdraw your
application.
Applications should be submitted electronically through www.jobbnorge.no.
Mark the application with J.NO. HF 09-006.
