The University of Sydney's Faculty of Arts has a proud history and
tradition of intellectual rigour. It offers one of the most comprehensive
and diverse range of humanities and social science studies in the Asia
Pacific region, and a vibrant research and teaching environment.

The School of Letters, Art and Media (SLAM) is one of Australia's most
active arts and humanities research centres, in Sydney, nationally, and
internationally. It is dedicated to excellence, innovation and high
achievement in undergraduate and postgraduate research, and to the support
of its student and academic research activities and careers.

Applications are invited for a fixed-term, three-year Lectureship (Level A
or B) in Modern English Language Studies within SLAM's Department of
English. The Department of English currently has twenty-nine academic
staff, and offers undergraduate and postgraduate education and training in
all fields and periods of English language and literature, from the
medieval to the contemporary. This position is available from January 2010.

The department is seeking a Lecturer who has demonstrable expertise in any
branch or branches of Modern English Language Studies; for example,
professional communication, rhetoric, language and its contextual practice,
literary stylistics, the history of the English language.  The appointee
will be expected to teach postgraduate coursework units as well as
undergraduate and Honours units of study, and to supervise Honours students
in relevant fields. In addition, they will be expected to undertake
administration and curriculum development as required, and to pursue an
active research program.

Applicants must have a doctorate in English or another closely related
field, or expect to have been awarded the degree by the time they take up
the appointment. They must be able to provide evidence of research
publication and current research activity in their field.  Experience in
teaching and ability to contribute to more than one area of departmental
teaching are essential.

Applicants must be willing to teach in the Master of Professional
Communication program and Academic Writing; they must also have the
capacity to contribute to teaching in units of study focused on literary
matters. Applicants must have excellent communication skills and a
commitment to teamwork in the teaching environment. Experience in lecturing
and in the supervision of Honours students is desirable.

The position is full-time fixed term for three years, subject to the
completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.

Remuneration package Level A: $79,854 - $85,717 (which includes a base
salary $67,478 - $72,432 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer's
contribution to superannuation).

Remuneration package Level B: $90,235 - $107,154 p.a. (which includes a
base salary Lecturer $76,250 - $90,546 p.a., leave loading and up to 17%
employer's contribution to superannuation).
