Description:
The project A5 "Focus realization, focus interpretation, and focus use from
a cross-linguistic perspective" in the Special Research Group SFB 632
"Information Structure" offers a Ph.D. position for young researchers in a
lively and stimulating research environment at the University of
Potsdam, Germany.
The position is open from now and should be filled as soon as possible.
The project investigates focus-semantic phenomena in a variety of
non-European languages, with a special focus on West African and (South)
East Asian languages. Special attention is paid to three phenomena:
i. the effects of special focus marking strategies (syntax, morphology,
prosody) on semantic interpretation and discourse felicity
ii.the grammatical realization of predicate focus and verum focus
iii. association with focus

The ideal candidate has a university degree (MA, Magister, Diploma, or
equivalent), a solid background in formal syntactic and/or semantic and/or
discourse theory, as well as an inclination for empirical (field)work on
West African or (South) East Asian languages.
Previous experience in fieldwork or German language skills are not required.
Salary group: ½ E13, which amounts to ~18.000 EUR p.a. before tax and other
deductions (health care, pension fund etc.), or to ~12.000 EUR p.a. after
deductions.
