Dissertation Title: Instrumental Functional Semantic Category Realization in
the English Language of VII-XVII cen.

Linguistic Field(s): Historical Linguistics

Subject Language(s): English (eng)

Dissertation Director(s):
Isabella Buniyatova

Dissertation Abstract:

The dissertation focuses on the analysis of multilevel language means
(lexical, word-forming, grammatical) that constitute instrument
functional-semantic field. The research presents their functioning
peculiarities and evolution in the English language of VII-XVII century.
The structure of the instrumental category comprises such semantic
components as Tool and Method. Field analysis presupposes the
implementation of synchronic and diachronic methods. The comparative
analysis of the field synchronic segments proved the stability of its
polycentric structure that contains two micro-fields: i.e. Tool and Method.
Their constituents comprise nuclear and peripheral zones, which testifies
to field compactness. The existence of mutual semantic segments and their
place in functional semantic space remains stable during VII-XVII century.
Thus, agent, patient, comitative and locative fields remain adjacent for
Tool, and functional semantic fields of Condition, Time, Cause, Manner and
Location are adjoining for Method.
