The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:
The Company
Perceptral was founded in May 2008 by Dr. Jonathan Pearl to become the
premier sound technology firm with a focus on improved handling of speech
prosody. A great wealth of information, naturally encoded in speech and
normally accessible to human listeners is not exploited in human-machine
interactions, remains unavailable to the hearing and vocally impaired who
use technology to complete communication, and lies beyond the reach for
business, information, and entertainment functions. The ability to produce
high-quality, realistic, flexible, and animated voices eludes current
providers, because the means to capture, classify, and synthesize these
elements of speech have not been commercially developed. The promise of
Perceptral's technology is to fill this unmet need.
The Opportunity
We seek a Linguist to join our team of Researchers beginning early 2010.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge and expertise in one or more of the
following areas: Speech Prosody; Discourse Analysis and Transcription;
Voice Recognition and Synthesis; Psycholinguistics, in particular sound
perception, analysis, and testing; Computational Linguistics with
experience in pattern matching, database design and management.
Current and pending efforts cover a range of issues: high-quality speed
variability in speech synthesis; speech compression & decoding;
human-computer interaction; automated transcription of prosody and
turn-taking cues. Interdisciplinary and eclectic researchers, and recent
PhDs are particularly encouraged to apply.
Interest in transforming cutting-edge sound perception research into
practical applications in speech technology is essential. Familiarity with
MATLAB; TTS; voice recognition, identification, and security; open source
software, and programming are helpful. Success in proposing and receiving
grants, knowledge of SBIR/STTR funding mechanisms, and eagerness in working
for a startup preferred. Authorization to work in the United States is
required. Salary competitive and commensurate with experience. Excellent
benefits and performance bonuses. Great potential for advancement and growth.
The Location
Perceptral is based in Racine, Wisconsin, alongside Lake Michigan, between
Milwaukee and Chicago. Twenty minutes from Mitchell International Airport
in Milwaukee and just over an hour from Chicago O'Hare, travel is
convenient to and from the region. The area affords an abundance of
year-round recreation and entertainment. Racine hosts a vibrant arts,
music, and cultural community. The city's population is just under 80,000.
The median home cost in Racine is around $120,000. Racine's cost of living
is about 15% below the U.S. average. Wisconsin was recently ranked number
one among all fifty states in the nation for health care quality.
