Linguistics and Philology in the 21st Century

For much of the 20th century it was common to figure Linguistics and Philology as rivals or even antagonists in the field of language-study. More recently, the border barriers have started to come down as researchers on both sides have increasingly recognised the complex interdependencies between code and context, synchrony and diachrony. 

The aim of our symposium is to celebrate this new spirit of partnership and to showcase some of the new research and researchers it will bring to the fore in the 21st century. We therefore invite offers of papers from doctoral students and early career researchers working on topics which link language-structure to language history or textual practice. The two-day event will also feature a hands-on workshop exploring ways in which philological and linguistic approaches can enrich each other and a panel discussion and Q&A session led by members of the Society representing work across a range of language-families. The workshop will be led by Professor Andrew Garrett of the University of California at Berkeley, who will also give the concluding paper of the symposium on Saturday 20th March.  An outline programme is given below as well as details of grants offered by the Society for student paper givers and for student associate members of the Society participating in the symposium workshop.

No fee will be charged for full members or student associate members of the Society attending this symposium. A fee of £10 will be charged to non-members (£5 to students). Fees will be collected on the day of the event during Registration (11.30am-1.00pm). Fees will be waived for individuals who join the Society on the day. The membership application form is available online from www.philsoc.org.uk/membership.asp. Membership subscription is £10pa for full members or £10 for five years for student associate members. A sandwich lunch and wine reception on Friday, as well as tea and coffee on both days are provided free of charge for all registered participants.

If you would like to book a place at this event, please complete the registration form (available at www.philsoc.org.uk) and return it by email attachment to Professor Wendy Ayres-Bennett at wmb1001 at cam.ac.uk. Those wishing to book accommodation in College should apply by Monday 21 December 2009. 

Single bed and breakfast accommodation will be provided free of charge for all speakers and for a limited number of other postgraduate student participants (see below). Others may book either single or twin bed and breakfast at Murray Edwards at a cost of £66.50 or £101.50 respectively. Please indicate on the registration form whether you require accommodation and your status (speaker, postgraduate student, other).

The Society intends to offer some grants for travel and/or accommodation to enable students to attend this event. If you would like to apply for funding, please contact the Hon. Treasurer, Dr Philip Durkin, by email to treasurer at philsoc.org.uk by Monday 14 December 2009; ask your supervisor to write to him in support of your application.
