Description: Within the Emmy Noether Program of the DFG (Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft), Two PhD student positions are available for a
project titled 'Pragmatic Functions and Meanings of Ancient Greek
Particles'. The project is funded for 3 years and, upon approval, for 2
more years. The research group will be led by Dr. Anna Bonifazi
(http://ifla.uni-stuttgart.de/index.php?article_id=121). 

Summary of the project: The research project is focused on the multiple
functions and meanings of particles in ancient Greek literary works
selected from epic, melic and dramatic poetry as well as from
historiographical prose. Particles are complex and problematic linguistic
features, because they typically do not contribute to the propositional
content of the sentences containing them and they serve more than one
communicative function. Yet, they are quite numerous and widely employed in
several ancient Indo-European languages, particularly in ancient Greek.
What is still missing is a systematic account of the ancient Greek
particles in the light of contemporary studies of particles in modern
languages within such disciplines as pragmatics and discourse analysis. The
project aims to start filling this gap by assembling a monograph that
explores meanings and uses of particles in landmark texts of archaic and
early classical Greek literature. The choice of the corpus is meant to
capture similarities and differences across genres, on the one hand, and
potential correlations with functions of particles in other old
Indo-European languages, on the other hand. A reading based on discourse
analysis will aim at highlighting both recurrent and distinctive features,
and will contribute to a better understanding of the overall meaning of the
texts. 

In order to make the teamwork efficient, exciting and fruitful, candidates
should show high motivation for the project and for teamwork, strong
interest in interdisciplinary research, and scholarly potential in terms of
critical thinking. Students who are developing specific competence in one
or more of the following fields are particularly encouraged to apply:
secondary literature concerning Aeschylus and/or Sophocles and/or Euripides
and/or Aristophanes and/or Herodotus and/or Thucydides; historical
linguistics; discourse studies; scholiography. A sound knowledge of English
(spoken and written) is required.  

Salaries correspond to the German level 1/2 BAT IIa/E 13 (PhD students).
