Abstract:
This monograph is a linguistic study of a corpus of Russian spoken stories,
told by children and adolescents about their night dreams. Fundamental
properties of spoken discourse are examined, such as prosodic and
semantico-syntactic segmentation of speech flow, pausing, pitch accents,
tempo differences, illocutionary and phasal structure, multi-clausal
constructions, speech errors and disfluencies, etc. Approaching these
phenomena from a cognitive standpoint enables a novel approach to Russian
grammar. The practical work with the "Night Dream Stories" corpus has
allowed to develop a discourse transcription as a tool of objective
representation for spoken Russian. An applied aspect of this study is a
comparative account of two classes of stories, belonging to speakers with
neurotic disorders and to intact speakers. The results of analysis are
applicable in diagnostics of neuroses. The corpus itself, consisting of 129
stories, is presented in two forms: text and audio (on the appended compact
disk). This is the first corpus of spoken Russian, transcribed on the basis
of systematic and explicit principles. The corpus is a valuable resource
for diverse studies of Russian in its spoken - that is, the basic, most
fundamental - form. The monograph is addressed to a broad audience,
interested in spoken language, linguistic theory, corpus-based approaches
to grammar and discourse, applications of linguistics in psychology and
medicine.
