Assistant Professor
Responsibilities:
SUNY New Paltz seeks a dynamic faculty person to teach Linguistics in a
tenure track position. The successful candidate will be appointed in the
Department of English with the expectation of teaching and service in
Linguistics (2/3) and English (1/3) (See the websites for courses, start
date: August 2010). Teach undergraduate and graduate courses for the
Linguistics Program and the Department of English, including Introduction
to Linguistics, Syntax, Semantics, Morphology, the Development of Modern
English, Bilingualism, Language Acquisition, and Practical Grammar.
Actively participate in the development of the growing Linguistics Program,
including in course development, student advising, committee work, and
assessment.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Linguistics required, but exceptional ABD candidates will be
considered. Specialization in formal linguistics (syntax, semantics,
morphology, and phonology). Strong preference will be given to candidates
with a secondary specialization in Historical Linguistics/History of
English, Language Acquisition, Bilingualism, and/or Socio-linguistics/
Dialect Studies. Commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching (three
courses per semester), an active program in research and scholarship,
interest in working in an interdisciplinary environment, commitment to
department and university service. Experience in teaching a broad range of
undergraduate linguistics courses and in course development (linguistics
and general education) is desirable. We are especially interested in
considering applicants who bring diverse cultural experiences or
perspectives to the campus and who can mentor and advise all members of our
diverse student body.
