Description:

The Research Unit 'Quantitative Language Comparison' at the
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Germany) seeks candidates for
postdoctoral and doctoral fellowships. The fellowships are for the duration
of two years with possible extension up to four years, starting 1 June 2010
or soon thereafter.

The positions are available in the research project 'Quantitative modeling
of historical-comparative linguistics: Unraveling the phylogeny of native
South American languages'. In this project computational approaches are
used to assist the traditional historical-comparative reconstruction of
languages. You will work in a multidisciplinary team to prepare large
amounts of lexical data for automatic processing, and formulate, test and
evaluate possible options of automatic analysis. More information about the

You should have a background in either (or various) of the following
fields: bioinformatics, computer linguistics, historical linguistics,
and/or the description of South American languages. Also required is an
interest to invest in learning about those aspects in which you do not have
any competence yet.

As a postdoctoral fellow you should have finished your PhD in Linguistics
or Computer Science. As a doctoral fellow you should have an MA in
Linguistics of Computer Science (or an equivalent qualification) and you
are expected to propose a thesis/dissertation research topic in which
mathematical/statistical methods are applied to historical linguistics.
Doctoral students are expected to participate in the Doctoral Program
'Empirical Language and Speech Processing' (ESP). Further information about
