Description:

The Global 30 International Graduate Program in Comparative Studies of
Language and Culture, Nagoya University seeks to fill a full-time,
non-tenure-track, Associate Professor position to teach introductory
courses in Japanese Studies and/or courses in comparative studies in the
humanities or social sciences. 

Possible courses that the successful candidate will be expected to teach:
(a)  Graduate Program
1.  Courses pertaining to the candidate's field of expertise
2.  Thesis writing
(b)  Undergraduate Program
Liberal education courses in humanities and social sciences

Minimum Qualifications
1.  Doctoral degree in some area of either (a) Japanese Studies or (b)
comparative studies in the humanities or social sciences. In the case of
(a), a comparative approach would be advantageous. In the case of (b), some
relevance to Japan or Japanese would be advantageous. In both cases
however, strong candidates whose field of expertise does not include these
attributes are encouraged to apply
2.  Demonstrated ability with relevant experience to teach and advise
students at the undergraduate and graduate levels
3.  Willingness to participate widely in the International Programs of the
university including but not limited to teaching courses to Japanese
students and some administrative duties
4.  Strong inter-personal skills and evidence of effective interaction with
students, faculty, administration, and community
5.  English fluency to effectively teach above-mentioned courses
6.  Non-Japanese citizenship

Preferred Qualifications
1.  Experience of working in a multicultural environment is preferred
2.  Japanese language proficiency is welcome though not required

Terms of Employment
The initial contract will start in April, 2011, and terminate in March,
2014. Contingent upon job performance and funding of the Global 30
International Program, the contract may be renewable for an additional
three-year term.
Salary: JPY4,000,000-10,000,000/year (all inclusive)*
Salary will depend on qualifications and experience, based on Nagoya
University's Salary Rules.
*Taxes and insurance will be withheld from the annual salary.

4.  Three sealed letters of professional recommendation - written within a
year of this application - with the referee's Name, Title, Name of
Organization, Relationship and Length of Relationship with Applicant, and
Contact Details included (note: we will conduct reference checks for
candidates who clear the initial screening) 
a.  At least two letters should address the applicant's teaching abilities
b.  At least one should address the applicant's ability to work in a
multicultural environment
5.  A one-page statement of teaching philosophy, addressing the applicant's
ability to integrate creative thinking and global perspectives into the
courses taught
6.  Evidence of teaching excellence, such as any of the following items: 
a.  Copies of past course syllabi - from at least two different courses - 
prepared and used by the applicant illustrating his/her teaching philosophy
b.  DVD of the applicant's teaching
c.  Student evaluation forms and summaries from at least two different courses
d.  Student letters
e.  Public commendations, prizes, and other awards for teaching excellence
7.  List of all publications and copies of up to five (Ph.D thesis is
acceptable)
8.  List of current areas of research
