I was asked by the fine people at ''Ask a Linguist'' to submit this here. I
tried writing a GRE-style analogy question which goes as follows:

semantics : semiotics

as

sentence : _________

When I wrote the question I thought the answer was ''alphabet''. However, I
also included the potential answer ''grammar''. Several of my friends
thought the answer should be ''grammar'', not ''alphabet''. Your thoughts?

Thanks,
Heather.
