Abstract:
This book is a resource book on diverse aspects of Dialect Syntax and Phonology.
It is also an outlet for researchers in the field of micro-comparative syntax.
The goal is to stimulate cooperation in the study of dialect syntax which is a
rapidly growing field. The study of linguistic diversity is one of the keys to
understanding the human linguistic capacity and the limits within which human
language systems may vary. The presentations in this book are approached in
various ways: empirical viewpoints, micro- and macro comparative studies, etc.
The book highlights the relations between dialects and linguistic theory, and
dialects and linguistic change; dialects and phonological theories, dialects and
phonological variations, among others. The book contains works on Nigerian
languages such as Yorùbá (Igálá, Owé, Àkókó, Ìlàje, Ifè, Mò?òlí, etc,)
Okó-Osányèn; Ìgbò, (Mgbidi, Ibibio), Esan, etc, Hausa (Margi, etc); Ghanaian
languages such as Ferari, Gurune, Akan (Twi, Fante), etc; Cameroonian languages
such as Bum; Kenya languages such as Ekègùsìi; and Caribbean Creole such as the
Island of Caribbean Sea, Guyana, Belize, and a continuum variety of English:
basilect, mesolect, acrolect, etc.). Although the emphasis has been placed on
dialectology (dialect-syntax) with much to contribute to the body of linguistic
knowledge and theory, other topics treated in the present volume include
language contact, language documentation and online discourse.
