non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international

Department: Philological Faculty
Job Location: Leipzig, Germany
Web Address: http://www.zv.uni-leipzig.de

Job Rank: Professor

Specialty Areas: Sociolinguistics; Varieties of English

Description:

The Philological Faculty at the University of Leipzig invites applications
for a W2-Professorship in Linguistics: Varieties of English

starting 01.04.2011

We seek a candidate who will connect well with the strengths of our
department of taking a holistic perspective on the subdisciplines of
English, its attempt at relating synchronic variation and historical
change, and its emphasis on empirical research methodologies (such as
quantitative (corpus-based) analyses of language use and social factors).
Expectations of teaching include: courses on varieties of English (B.A.,
M.A., teacher training, graduate) and the development of new courses
contributing to the intended programme 'European Sociolinguistics'. We are
particularly interested in candidates with an expertise in I: World
English(es), social and regional varieties of English and II:
Multilingualism and contact linguistics, who are familiar with non-European
varieties of English.

Moreover, the ideal candidate would be expected to (1) develop an active
research program that includes an empirical dimension, and (2) contribute
to the ongoing development of the university's central research area 4
('Brain, Cognition and Language') and the interdisciplinary investigations
carried out there. Additionally, it is assumed that the candidate has
gained experience in the acquisition of external funding and the
organization of research in an international scope.

Rights and obligations of the job holder derive from the Saxonia state Law
on Higher Education (SächsHSG) and the "Sächsische
Dienstaufgabenverordnung". The conditions of employment are set down in §
58 SächsHSG. Women are especially encouraged to apply. Severely disabled
persons are encouraged to apply and will be given preference in the case of
equal suitability.

Please submit your written application including the usual documents
(including a list of publications, record of (academic) teaching
activities, a certified copy of the certificate of the highest academic
degree) before 21-03-2010 to the application address below.
