The School of Linguistics at Bangor University is eligible to submit up to
12 applicants to the Arts and Humanities Research Council's (AHRC) 2010
postgraduate funding competition. Students wishing to apply for AHRC
funding are requested to contact Prof. Vyv Evans (v.evans at bangor.ac.uk) to
request an application form. Applicants must be citizens of the EU.
Completed applications must be received by Prof. Evans on or before
Wednesday 24 February 2010. Those applications selected will be submitted
to the AHRC on behalf of the applicant by the University.
Applications are particularly sought for the Research Preparation Masters
competition (which provides funding for an MA programme and beyond), and
PhD study. Details of MA programmes at Bangor are available here:
http://www.bangor.ac.uk/linguistics/listcourses_pg.php.en.
Outstanding applicants for PhD study are particularly sought for the
following areas:
-Syntactic theory: Dr. Dirk Bury would welcome proposals in syntax and
related areas. (He is currently supervising research on grammatical effects
of language contact.)
-Cognitive linguistics: Prof. Vyv Evans welcomes proposals on figurative
language and abstract thought, conceptual structure and lexical
representation within the framework of LCCM Theory.
-Bilingual sound systems: Prof. Ineke Mennen is interested in supervising
projects that address how bilinguals manage two (possibly competing) sound
systems (specifically at the prosodic level), and/or the relative influence
of prosody and segments on perceptions of foreign accent in L2 learners.
She would be specifically interested in exploring neuro-scientific
approaches to investigate perceptions of foreign accent.
-Bilingual cognition: Dr. Panos Athanasopoulos is supervising PhDs in the
areas of language and thought, bilingual cognition, first and second
language acquisition, and categorical perception of colour, objects, and
events.
