Our philosophy:
Humour is a constitutive element of human life as witnessed in cultural
narratives, literature, linguistic and multi-modal texts, discourse and
conversation, essays, anecdotes and in diverse communication types: in short,
humour is an indispensable human intellectual trait and product.

What are the culturally grounded imprints and patterns in producing, perceiving,
interpreting and appreciating humour? What is the role of socialization in
seeing the multicultural and multilingual world with humour? How is humour
situated, narrated and mediated? How does humour help constitute social
identity? How does humour open up taboos and how does it facilitate the
permeability between cultures? 'San Zen che ride': What is the place and message
of a smiling saint in European culture?

Further thought-provoking topics:
- the relationship between humor and the success of communicative action, with 
special focus on persuasion
- the impact and consequence of humor at various levels of the information flow 
and information exchange (from personal to the media level)
- humour, wit and media rhetoric: entertainment, persuasion, information

Topics:
We will accept proposals for papers on topics that examine humour in the domains
of linguistic pragmatics, literature, socio-linguistics, psycho-linguistics or
cultural anthropology. Of special interest, however, are contributions on the
following:

(1) multilingual and multicultural contexts for humour
(2) humour as identity, self expression and self realization
(3) social attitudes and values via explicit and implicit humour socialization
(4) cultural narratives and humour
(5) narratives, anecdotes, tales, jokes and genres of literature
(6) humour in pragmatics, cognitive linguistics and teaching languages.

Presentations:
There will be one paper accepted per any one contributor. Contributors may also 
be asked to serve as chairs. Chairs will be requested to strictly enforce the
20+10-minute limit for each talk. Presenters will be encouraged to present in
English, if possible, though Italian can also be accepted. The conference will
be limited to eight 45-minute plenary lectures and thirty 20-minute session
papers during the three days of the symposium.

Presentation Proposals:
Abstracts of 300 words (or 2000 characters), in English or in Italian, should be
submitted to Giampaolo Poletto at g.poletto at yahoo.it. 
Candidate participants are kindly requested to specify if they are going to
deliver their presentations in English or in Italian, so that the conveners can
provide the necessary assistance to the audience, for the sake of everybody's
understanding and accessibility.

Email communication with Mr Poletto could be conducted either in English or in 
Italian. Abstracts should be informative and rigorously structured to show the
strength and the novelty of the presentation. Abstracts should be sent as
attachments (in .rtf or .doc files) by 20 March 2010. Contributors will be
informed about acceptance by 10 April, 2010.

Notification of acceptance: 10 April, 2010

Conference proceedings and publication of selected papers:
A full text of the papers to be presented (with a maximum length of 10 pages),
shall be submitted electronically to g.poletto at yahoo.it by 30 May, 2010. The
collection of papers will be made available on the site of the conference on CDs
distributed among the participants. 

The organizing committee will negotiate with reputable publishers about a book
publication. The book is not going to count as proceedings, it will be an edited
selection of papers submitted to the editors according to the editorial guidelines.

The accepted languages of the publication are the languages of the Symposium: 
English and Italian. Information regarding the formatting and bibliographic 
style required will be found on the link Formatting of the conference website.

31 October 2010: Submission of papers prepared for book publication according to
Editorial Guidelines
