We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To what extent can a theoretical model be divorced from the data it
was originally from?
I'm thinking of writing a paper on this. I will answer with reference to
Greimas' actantial theory. I plan to analyze some passages from the
Bible to support any claims made (possibly some parables).
My plans/claims so far seem flimsy and not particularly substantial and I
would appreciate any ideas, suggestions for reading, and topics/areas
that would need covering in such an assignment.
I am a Masters level student and this assignment isn't for any credit. It
was just a "food for thought" question posed by a lecturer at the end of
a narrative lecture and I thought this sounded like an interesting topic
to try to write about.
I would appreciate any help.
Kind regards,
Beverly Grimes
