Meeting Description: 

The 2010 ?ód? Session will be geared towards theory, and will deal with
theoretical aspects of the central theme of the Duo Colloquium and the
sub-themes suggested for it. The central theme is "Translation and Meaning"
and the sub-themes are:

A. Meaning in translation/interpreting from the point of view of:

1. Cognitive sciences (e.g. think-aloud protocols and other modes of
reflection, prototypicality, etc.)
2. Computer-assisted translation training, electronic teaching/learning
environments, distance teaching/learning
3. Corpus linguistics and language corpora
4. History of translation
5. Lexicology, lexicography
6. Local translation/interpreting programmes
7. Machine translation, machine-aided translation, other computer aids,
combinations of computer aids
8. New theoretical/practical developments
9. Philosophy / the philosophy of language, etc.
10. Pragmatics, semantics, semiotics
11. Psycholinguistics, psychology
12. Sociolinguistics/sociology and minority status, institutionalised
multilingualism, interculturality, cultural identity
13. Software localisation
14. Subtitling, dubbing
15. Terminology, conceptuology, expert systems (e.g. term-word distinction,
automated term extraction, etc.)
16. Text linguistics (e.g. text typology, text analysis, etc.)
17. The interplay between theory and practice
18. Translation theory, translation studies
19. Various types of translating/interpreting
20. The relation between translator/interpreter and client/customer
21. The student of translation/interpreting
22. The translation trainer/the trainer of interpreting
23. The translator/interpreter

B. Meaning in the translation/interpretation of:
1. The language of economics / business
2. The language of law / politics
3. The language of media and the arts
4. The language of medicine / biology
5. The language of science / technology / IT
6. The language of tourism / leisure
7. Holy scriptures
8. Literature
9. LSP vs. general language vs. phraseology vs. terminology, etc.
10. Allusions, figurative language, jokes, metaphors, etc.

C. Quality assessment of translation/interpreting and modes/modalities of
training

D. The role of translation methods/strategies in:

1. The actual practice of translating/interpreting
2. The training of translation/interpreting

Participation is open to translators, interpreters, teachers of
translation, teachers of interpreting, linguists, terminologists,
terminographers, computer specialists, lexicographers, publishers, etc.

The languages of the ?ód? session will be English, German, Spanish and French.
