Meeting Description:
This conference addresses a number of fundamental questions in the domain of
contact-induced change that have emerged from the debate in the last decades,
and it also aims to formulate new questions:
- Is there a difference in output of contact-induced change in language
maintenance situations and in language shift situations?
- Do mixed languages, creoles, and metatypized languages (in the definition of
Malcolm Ross) reflect essentially different histories of language contact than
other languages, or do they constitute the edges of a continuum?
- To what extent do structural differences and similarities between the
languages in contact shape the way they influence each other?
Invited speakers (to be confirmed):
Robert Nicolaï, Alexandra Aikhenvald, Sarah Thomason, Don Winford, Malcolm Ross.
The conference will take place over two and a half days, namely Thursday,
Friday, and Saturday morning, and in line with the aim to address and discuss
the fundamental issues we will not have parallel sessions.
