The University of Nova Gorica is pleased to announce the launch of a new
three-year Ph.D. programme in Linguistics within its Graduate School. The
University of Nova Gorica is a young and rapidly expanding
research-oriented state-accredited higher education institution in Slovenia. 

The new Ph.D. programme in Linguistics is the first of its kind in
Slovenia, aimed at preparing high quality experts in the cognitive science
of language in the Balkan and Central European region. The language of
instruction of the programme is English.
 
The programme provides students with solid education and training in the
core areas of formal linguistic theory: syntax, semantics, and phonology in
the framework of generative grammar. The curriculum consists of required
coursework, along with the writing and oral defence of a dissertation.
Ph.D. level courses in the core areas are taught by the programme faculty.
In addition, the programme offers a selection of courses in current trends
in phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, psycho- and neurolinguistics,
and computational linguistics. These are taught by leading international
researchers and take the form of mini-courses. 

The faculty of the programme currently includes: Jonathan Kaye, Slavica
Kochovska, Franc Maru?i?, Penka Stateva, Arthur Stepanov and Rok ?aucer.
The students are actively involved in research from the very outset of
their doctoral training in collaboration with the various faculty members
of the programme. Linguists from other universities are regularly invited
to present their work at organized colloquia.

The programme is open to students from all countries. Prospective
applicants should normally have a background corresponding to an M.A. in
Linguistics or another field that has Linguistics in its curriculum. Since
the programme emphasizes a formal approach, we also encourage applications
from students from fields that use formal tools and methods of analysis
(e.g. mathematics, computer science etc.), who have an interest in natural
language and its mental representation. 

The official deadline for the 2010/2011 academic year is August 31, 2010.
However, we strongly encourage prospective candidates to submit their
applications as early as possible.
