Description:
Applications are invited for a PhD position in Natural Language Processing /
Computational Psycholinguistics at the new junior research group headed by Vera
Demberg. The research will investigate the impact that discourse effects such as
discourse cues ('only', 'therefore', 'however'), referring expressions etc. have
on human processing difficulty and the ability to remember information. The
project includes both experimental research using methods such as eye-tracking
or EEG and computational work using machine learning and probabilistic modeling.
Saarland University is a European leader in Computer Science research and
teaching, and is especially renowned for its research in Computational
Linguistics and Natural Language Processing. The newly established group is a
part of the interdisciplinary MMCI Cluster of Excellence formed in partnership
with top-ranked research institutions located on the Saarland University campus:
Max Planck Institute for Informatics, Max Planck Institute for Software Systems
and German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). Researchers come
from all over the world and the research language is English.
The ideal candidate for the PhD position should have a masters degree in
computational linguistics, cognitive science, psycholinguistics, computer
science (with an interest in cognition and linguistics) or a related field. A
strong academic record, excellent analytical skills and a clear aptitude for
autonomous, creative research will be priority selection criteria. The candidate
should have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
The salary and social benefits are according to Germany's public sector TV-L E13
scale. PhD researchers will be employed part-time, and will have the opportunity
of pursuing a doctoral degree at Saarland University.
The applications should include:
- CV

Applications (preferably, in a single PDF file) and inquiries should be directed
by email to:
Vera Demberg, v.demberg at gmx.de
The position is open until filled. Applications received before August 1st will
receive full consideration. If you are going to ACL 2010 in Uppsala, please let
me know. The starting date is Oct 1, 2010 or later (negotiable).
Saarland University wishes to increase the proportion of women in research and
strongly encourages qualified female candidates to apply. Priority will be given
to disabled candidates with equivalent qualifications.
