Advanced Course (16 hours) taught by Joaquim Brandão de Carvalho
(Université de Paris VIII, France).
Topics include:
Back to basics (Retour aux sources?): la mesure de la complexité en
phonologie.
1. Histoire et ambiguïté de la notion de marque en phonologie: complexité,
spécification, rapport implicationnel, optimalité, fréquence.
2. Problème I: Quel est le fondement de la spécification? Spécification
contrastive versus Radical underspecification theory (Archangeli).
3. Problème II: Questions liées à la spécification contrastive: 'pairwise
algorithm' versus 'successive division algorithm' (Dresher); binarisme versus
monovalence des traits ; la marque comme opération mentale.
4. Qu'est-ce qui est dans le lexique? Allophonie et 'phonetic detail', pertinence
et linéarité du signifiant.
The venue of the course will be Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do
Porto (Porto, Portugal). Sessions will be taught in French (though English and
Portuguese may be used in discussion and debate).
