Call for Papers

According to Dictionnaire encyclopédique de l'enseignement et de la formation 
(edited by Christiane Etévée and Phillippe Champy, Paris, Nathan, 1994, p. 561-
563) "Interdisciplinarity calls for dialogue and the exchange of knowledge,
analyses and methods between two or more disciplines. It implies interactions
and mutual enrichment among different specialists". Interdisciplinarity equally
pertains to sciences and humanities. Certain traditional academic disciplines,
such as philosophy, anthropology, mathematics, business, education, ecology,
history could be considered more interdisciplinary than others. Other more
recent branches such as cybernetics, the theory of systems and media studies are
also interdisciplinary. As a matter of fact, all the disciplines which are
considered independent nowadays, were practiced by the old Greeks under the name
of philosophy. Logic was practiced by Plato in the form of philosophy and later
on it was individualized by Aristotle, who also practiced physics under the name
of cosmology. The only difference herein lies in methodological individualism.
Consequently, modern disciplines are nothing else but the outcome of an
individualisation of philosophical issues.

By promoting the research of interactions in different areas of knowledge and
their complementarity, interdisciplinarity engenders a certain openness of the
mind. The notion of interdisciplinarity represents a type of approach, under
different embodiments: complementarity (when two or more disciplines aim at a
common objective), circulation (when a discipline uses, borrows or assimilates
the concepts of another discipline), convergence (when a new discipline emerges
as a result of the cooperation between scientists belonging to different
disciplinary fields) and divergence (when differing points of view address a
certain issue). Along with interdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity is widely
explored and often contested. The basic definition of transdisciplinarity, seen
as a means of creating and applying new knowledge, has been enriched by others
such as: production of knowledge leading to the transgression of the scientific
boundaries (Helga Nowotny); an enlarged operational framework, transcending the
disciplinary limitations (Basarab Niculescu and Edgar Morin).Typically, academic
disciplines are often committed to their own methods of investigation, which can
lead to misunderstandings and disparities. The research centers and academic
institutions, often organized according to disciplinary criteria, can represent
a deterrent to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. Moreover,
cognitive constraints are a true stumbling block to interdisciplinary or
transdisciplinary research, calling for an elaborate knowledge of several
disciplines. To what extent can we speak about interdisciplinarity and
transdisciplinarity in language, literature and art throughout the centuries?
What is the impact of interdisciplinarity on education, particularly upon
institutionalizing interdisciplinary training programmes?

We invite papers on the following topics: 

1. Interdisciplinarity and / or transdisciplinarity in language: on the origin
of words and their use in specialized languages, the different types of
grammars, mathematical / computational linguistics, translation studies and
practice.

2.  Interdisciplinarity and / or transdisciplinarity in literature: the meeting
point between literature, literature-related fields and science and technology.

3.  Interdisciplinarity and / or transdisciplinarity in foreign language
teaching methodology. From a pedagogical point of view, the concept of
interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity encompasses a wealth of notions: it
establishes the existence of a common nexus for learning and a mutually shared
culture. The desideratum of undergraduate studies is to empower students to
acquire self- knowledge and ultimately to achieve engaged citizenship.

Deadlines:
- Submission of abstracts (500 words): March 30th, 2010 
- Submission of first draft: April 15th, 2010 
- Feedback from the Conference Scientific Committee: April 30th, 2010 
- Payment of the conference fee: May 28th, 2010 
- Submission of final paper: May 29th, 2010 

Abstracts should have no more than 500 words and will be written in English.
They should be joined by at least 5 key words in English. The deadline for
sending the abstracts is March 30th, 2010. You will receive the confirmation of
participation via email by April 30th 2010. 

Papers can be written in the official languages of the EU; however, they will be
presented in: English, German, Romanian or French and should be no less than 10
pages long. 

Each presentation will take 20 minutes; 10 extra minutes are assigned for
discussions. Prior to publication, papers will be refereed by an editorial
committee. Therefore, participants are asked to provide the draft of the paper
via email by April 1st in order to be peer-reviewed by the scientific committee
of the conference. We kindly ask the participants to abide by the
word-processing requirements provided by the organizers.

The final version of the article to be published will be handed in to the
organizers together with the electronic version (on CD). A selection of articles
will be published in the journal of the Modern Languages Department, Annales
Universitatis Apulensis, Series Philologica (ISSN 1582-5523), journal accredited
by CNCSIS, listed under the B+ category and indexed in the CEEOL international
database. The other accepted articles will be included either in the journal of
The Centre for Research and Innovation in Linguistic Education CIEL - JoLIE or
in the volume of Conference Proceedings. The scientific committee will decide on
the papers to be published in Annales Universitatis Apulensis, Series
Philologica, JoLIE or the volume of Proceedings.
