The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of Edinburgh
Department: Linguistics and English Language
Job Location: Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
Web Address: http://ling.ed.ac.uk
Job Rank: Lecturer
Specialty Areas: Sociolinguistics
Description:
Permanent, full-time Lecturer in Linguistics & English Language, within the
School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. Candidate must have
a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in sociolinguistics or a very closely related
academic subarea; experience of teaching sociolinguistic topics at
university level; and an excellent and developing research program in an
area that has potential for attracting external funding and relates to
sociolinguistic variation or other social aspects of language. Candidates
whose research has a quantitative orientation, and/or who have the ability
to teach the use of statistics in research in the language sciences, are
strongly preferred.
The University of Edinburgh has the largest concentration of language
specialists in the UK, and one of the strongest interdisciplinary
communities for the study of language anywhere in the world. Linguistics
and English Language has more than 20 full-time teaching staff and a
significant number of research staff, postdoctoral fellows, and so on.
Within the same school are several psycholinguists, and in the adjacent
building the School of Informatics has a significant number of
computational linguists, speech scientists, and so on. This position (which
is a replacement for Miriam Meyerhoff, who has accepted an offer of a
Professorship at the University of Auckland in New Zealand) represents an
opportunity for an ambitious sociolinguist to have a permanent position in
a dynamic and supportive community where there is considerable student
demand for instruction and research supervision in sociolinguistics. It is
hoped that this position can be filled as early as this September (2010).
Note that the closing date is quite soon (April 6th). For further
information correspond with the Head of Linguistics and English Language,
Professor Geoffrey K. Pullum (gpullum at ling.ed.ac.uk). See also

501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These

contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the
EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple
administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without
costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company
operates such a program.
