Meeting Description:

The conference will open on the afternoon of Thursday 23rd September with a
series of interactive data workshops (including contributions from Professor Ben
Rampton, King's College London; Professor Angela Creese, University of
Birmingham; Dr Frances Rock, Cardiff University; and Dr Sarah Collins,
University of York), involving discussion of selected data combined with a paper
presentation, allowing delegates to debate the process of interpretation and
analysis. 

Friday 24th September will then comprise plenary lectures, parallel oral
presentations and a closing debate, with plenty of opportunity to exchange ideas
with speakers and other delegates. 

Plenary speakers include Professor Charles Briggs (Department of Anthropology,
University of California, Berkeley) and Professor Carey Jewitt (Institute of
Education, University of London). 

The conference is affiliated with the UK Linguistic Ethnography Forum and is
organised by Dr. Fiona Copland (School of Languages and Social Sciences, Aston
University), Dr. Julia Snell (Institute of Education, University of London) and
Dr. Sara Shaw (University College London / The Nuffield Trust). 

Call for Papers

We are inviting abstracts for papers and posters for the 2010 conference on
Explorations in Ethnography Language and Communication. The theme of the
conference is 'perspectives on data'. Particular consideration will therefore be
given to papers that explore questions such as: 'what counts as 'data' in
linguistic ethnography?'; 'What is the relationship between data and researcher
or data and participant?'; 'How should/can ethnographic data be analysed and
interpreted?' Submissions are encouraged from across disciplines and topics
including, for instance, research on health, education, culture and identity,
but abstracts should provide a clear focus on how ethnographic concepts and
methods can be applied to the description and analysis of language data.

Oral presentations will be 30 minutes in length, followed by 15 minutes for 
discussion. Dedicated time and space will also be allocated for poster 
presentations. Abstracts (up to 300 words) should be submitted by e-mail 
attachment (Word files) to lss_eelc at aston.ac.uk. Please submit two files, one
containing the abstract and details of the author(s) (name(s), affiliation,
email address) and one containing an anonymous abstract. Under the title for the
abstract, please give four keywords which summarise the paper/poster. In the
body of your email please specify whether the abstract is for a poster or paper
presentation.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is Friday 16th April 2010. 
Registration for the conference will open in June 2010.
