« La FASP (fiction à substrat professionnel), une autre voie d'accès aux 
langues de spécialité : enjeux didactiques ».
L'objectif de cette rencontre est d'explorer le potentiel que présente, en
didactique des langues et cultures de spécialité, le vaste domaine de fiction
populaire (romanesque, cinématographique ou télévisuelle), essentiellement
anglophone, dont l'imaginaire trouve son ancrage dans un environnement
spécialisé juridique, médical, scientifique, journalistique? 

'FASP (thrillers embedded in a specialized or professional environment) as a
means of access to ESP: didactic considerations.' The objective of this 2- day
conference is to refocus the debate on the FASP novels, TV series, 
movies as a didactic tool in the specialised field of ESP (English for Specific
Purposes).

ESP teaching has always maintained an interest in fiction as a teaching tool,
particularly classical fiction (Bleak House by Charles Dickens for law students,
Scoop by Evelyn Waugh for journalism students, Moby Dick by Herman Melville for
students of marine biology, etc.)

In 1999, Michel Petit introduced a new set of dynamics in the traditional ESP
approach to fiction in an article titled, "La fiction à substrat professionnel:
une autre voie d'accès aux langues de spécialité". This seminal text set out to
explore the ESP didactic potential of a particular genre of English popular
fiction - novels, cinema or television - in which plot, characters and
denouement are embedded in and arise from a specialised or professional
environment - la fiction à substrat professionnel or FASP - such as, for
example, law, medicine, journalism, forensics, art...

Since 1999, interest in the FASP as an object of research has shown considerable
development. The original focus on didactic considerations for ESP purposes has
evolved into an exploration of the FASP as a literary genre per se, and the
previously essentially Anglocentric field of study has extended to include other
language spheres as well.

The 2-day conferences held in Grenoble in 2009 focused on this evolution and
highlighted a number of resulting didactic interrogations. The 2-day conferences
to be held in Caen in 2010 accordingly propose to refocus the debate on the FASP
as a didactic tool in the specialised field of ESP.

Papers are invited in the following areas of discussion:
The FASP and its relation the authentic document.
The FASP as a vector of representations and generator of perceptions.
The thriller genre: a factor of incitation or inhibition in ESP teaching and
learning?
Didactisation of FASP into pedagogic learning and evaluation tools.
Where does the ESP teacher stand between specialised author and specialising
learner?
Intertextuality and the FASP : from page to screen, from fictional text to
authentic text.
What are the cultural and intellectual stakes involved in using mass literature
for classroom purposes?
The FASP and mediation.

Papers may be presented in English or French
Abstracts (approx. 150 words) are to be submitted to the three co-organisers by
Monday 6th April, 2010
Selected papers will published in 2011 in an international, peer-reviewed journal
