Conference on Value and Evaluation
English Department, University of Sousse
25, 26, 27 November 2010
Since the coming of the new millennium and the advancing globalization of
our contemporary world, issues of value and evaluation in descriptions and
discussions of cultural production and activity have become even more
urgent and complex than they were previously. The English Department of
the University of Sousse welcomes papers in the fields of linguistics,
civilization, and literature that examine the extent to which 'value and/or
evaluation' are crucial, even controversial dimensions of the pedagogical
experience and the world beyond the walls of academia.
Even a shortlist of topics inspired by the often intertwined categories of
value and evaluation suggests some of the varied directions that can be
pursued: the relationship between interpretation and evaluation; cultural
studies and moral evaluation; aesthetic value; aesthetic evaluation; value-
free scholarship; role of evaluation in linguistic theory; the devaluation and
mechanization of language; assessment and evaluation; evaluation of
cultural competence; culture-specific and culture-general values; pop
culture; popular literature and sous genres (fantasy, science fiction,
detective fiction, etc.); research methods in evaluation; research ethics;
deconstructionism and the 'trans-valuation of all values'; hermeneutics;
literary canonicity; ethical dimensions of literature; the value of cultural
studies; the development of hybrid cultures; lifestyle choices; the influence
of modernity/modernism; the influence of post-modernism/ post-modernity;
evaluation of the content of civilization studies; political correctness;
evaluation of the notion of multiculturalism; evaluation of the significance of
identity markers (race, gender, sexual orientation, class, religion); imperialist
assumptions in radical criticism; re-evaluation of Orientalism; ideologues of
science/ideologues of religion; secular societies; the value of politically
engaged intellectual work; etc.
