We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Dear Linguists,
My colleague and I are collecting a bibliography for an article on the
motivation of the names for chess pieces in various languages. We are
wondering whether someone might know about any research published
so far on the subject. Preferably in English though it may be concerned
with any other language or languages. Preferably from the cognitive
linguistic viewpoint but not necessarily.
We have consulted several databases (ISI web sciences, Bibliographie
Linguistique online, Philosopher's Index, DOAJ, EBSCO, Scirus,
Scopus, ERIC, MLA, Academic Search Complete, Science Direct,
Cognitive Lings Bibliography on CD-Rom 2006, Oxford Journals,
Persee, Wiley online library, Academic Journal) plus several publishers'
websites but found nothing directly on target. (A few articles on
language and chess include Judit Simo's 2009 "Chess Metaphors in
American English and Hungarian", Cohen's 1982 "Chess as a model of
language", and David Ritchie's "ARGUMENT IS WAS - or is it a game
of chess?", but these are not exactly on the same subject.)
We would be grateful for any suggestions and will post a summary of
responses or a list of items if there is interest.
