Description:
The Department of Linguistics & TESOL announces a five-year package
(assistantship and full tuition) to exceptional candidates who are applying to
begin doctoral studies in Fall 2011. These Enhanced Graduate Teaching
Assistantships are for PhD Linguistics students newly admitted for the Fall 2011
semester and have a 9-month stipend of $15,300, in addition to a Graduate
Doctoral Teaching Fellowship that will cover tuition for full-time enrollment.
(9 hours of coursework per semester is a full-time load).
Our Department has an established doctoral program, with strengths in language
documentation, formal linguistics (syntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonology,
phonetics), corpus linguistics, and second language acquisition, especially
experimental approaches to SLA. Faculty strengths also include Asian,
Austronesian, and Native American languages. We are hiring new faculty this year
(an expansion hire) in language documentation. Facilities include a new Speech
Sounds Lab with a soundproof booth and a portable ultrasound, and a
Psycholinguistics Lab with an eye-tracker. The graduate students in our
Department also organize an annual student conference that includes the Yumi
Nakamura Prize in Linguistics, which awards a cash prize to the top
presentations at the conference.
