Meeting Description:

This conference will explore two vast yet related topics, science and myth.
While their respective relevance to literature and linguistics may seem
transparent, we are especially interested in investigating the perhaps
unexpected links between the two. Literature may be seen as a non-scientific
discipline, but science nonetheless finds a place in it. Linguistics, although a
science, also has its 'mythical' elements. 

Call For Papers

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

- Debunking theories and myths
- Cutting edge theories in literature and linguistics
- New applications of old theories
- Reinventing and/or repurposing myths
- Boundaries between science and pseudoscience
- Scientific writing (methods, art practices, literary movements); Science and
Realism; Science and Surrealism
- Language myths
- Interdisciplinarity (multiple theories/approaches)
- Mythical figures in literature and linguistics (heroes and living legends)
- Rewriting Mythological/Classical Characters
- Mathematical applications to literature (OULIPO)
- The Limits of Science
- Miracles - unexplainable science - beyond science
- Myth busting - political/social/ethnic stereotypes/clichés
- The act of writing as experimentation
- Linguistics then and now: the evolution of scientific methodologies          
(historical linguistics, philology, sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, etc.)

- Keynote speakers TBA

We invite those interested in our theme to submit an abstract (300 words
maximum) by email to makunz at indiana.edu before December 20, 2010. Presentations
should not exceed 20 minutes and may be in English, French or Italian. Please
include your institutional affiliation, contact information and a brief
biography focusing on your work along with your abstract.
