Description:
The Department of Romance and Classical Languages at Michigan State
University invites applications for Director of Language Programs in the
tenure system (rank open). The language director will oversee the language
courses in the department, engage in research, and teach two courses per
year. In addition, the Director will work with coordinators and will
supervise the training of fixed-term teaching faculty and teaching
assistants.
The department, newly formed from the merger of the Departments of French,
Classics and Italian and Spanish and Portuguese, is located in the College
of Arts and Letters and is part of a vibrant language community that has
benefited from university support evidenced by the newly established Center
for Language Teaching Advancement (CeLTA), an expanding Less Commonly
Taught Language programs, a recently created global studies in arts and
humanities major, world-renown study abroad initiatives and a strong Second
Language Studies doctoral program.
It is anticipated that the successful candidate will become part of a
growing research community in second language studies (http://sls.msu.edu)
We seek a person with strong management skills and scholarly interest in
language teaching and learning, including the use of multi-media. The
successful candidate must have near-native proficiency in one Romance
language and familiarity with another is desired. A Ph.D. is required,
preferably with a specialization in applied linguistics or second language
acquisition. The application deadline is November 12, 2010. Send a cover
