1500-1900) consistent with such research topics as Women as language
users; Women learning and teaching foreign languages; Language books
for women; Women in language books; Women, foreign languages and
society.
Call For Papers
Dear Colleague,
Following the most successful conference held in Granada on 5-7
November 2008, you are cordially invited to an international conference
entitled Female Voices: Women and foreign languages in modern Europe to
be held at Palazzo Feltrinelli in Gargnano on Lake Garda, 6th to 8th June
2011. The Conference will be jointly organized by the Department of
Language Studies and Compared Literature of the University of Milan and
CIRSIL - Centro Interuniversitario di Ricerca per la Storia degli
Insegnamenti Linguistici (i.e.the Italian interuniversity research centre for
the history of foreign language teaching) - in co-operation with the sister
associations and research groups in France (SIHFLES: Société
Internationale pour l'Histoire du Français Langue Étrangère ou Seconde),
the Netherlands (PHG: Peeter Heynsgenootschap, Learned society for the
history of language teaching), Portugal (APHELLE: Associação Portuguesa
para a História do Ensino das Línguas e Literaturas) and Spain (SEHEL:
Sociedad Española para la Historia de las Enseñanzas Lingüísticas).
The conference welcomes historical studies (approximately, 1500-1900) on
any topic consistent with the theme of the conference. The following rubrics
and suggestions may be useful:
- Women as language users:
-women as foreign language speakers
-women and language skills
-women and plurilingualism
-women and the study of modern vs classical languages
-women translators and their job
- Women learnigng and teaching foreign languages:
-genre-based linguistic education
-learning foreign languages at home or at girls' schools
-foreign language teaching methodology and women
-women as foreign language teachers
-syllabuses for teaching women foreign languages
- Language books for women:
-grammar books, manual and dictionaries for women
-bilingual or multilingual manuals of conversation for women
-reading books for girls
-the authors of language books and manuals for women
- Women in language books:
-women's words and the women's world in dictionaries
-teaching grammar and morality in grammar books for women
-women in travel guides
- WOMEN, FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND SOCIETY:
-'female' vs 'male' languages
-foreign languages and gender stereotypes
-women's reactions to sexism in languages
-women, foreign languages and different worldviews
-schools, colleges, and academies for teaching girls foreign languages
-teaching politeness strategies, address forms and speech acts in foreign
languages in order to convey or subvert traditional roles and behaviours
Abstracts of no more than 300 words in .doc or .rtf format are to be sent to
the local representatives of the scientific committee:

The deadline for abstracts is the 30th of November 2010, acceptance will
be notified by the 15th of January 2011. Papers should be 20 mins in
length, with around 5 to 10 mins allotted for discussion.
A few invited speakers are being contacted by the scientific committee; their
names and the titles of the lectures will be given in the second circular.

The Milan-based organizing committee is chaired by professor Giovanni
Iamartino, and is composed by Angela Andreani, Barbara Berti, Kim Grego
and Andrea Nava.
Conference organization
Gargnano del Garda is a small idyllic village on Lake Garda, which can be
reached by car or coach. The nearest airports are Milan Linate, Bergamo
Orio al Serio and Verona: all of these have coach and/or train connections
to Gargnano. Conference delegates from abroad or from distant places in
Italy are expected to get to Gargnano on June 5th, as the conference will
start mid-morning on Monday 6th. It will close on Wednesday 8th at about
13.00. Details on registration procedure, as well as on accommodation and
meal options, will be given in the second circular and posted on the
conference website, which is currently under construction
