The Forrest and Patsy Shumway Chair of Excellence in Romance Languages,
University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Title: Professor
Starting Date: August 1, 2011
The faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures (MFLL) seeks an
internationally recognized full professor in Romance linguistics (French
and/or Spanish) to fill this position beginning in Fall 2011, with
specialization in one or more of the following areas: translation studies;
dialectology; comparative linguistics; sociolinguistics; or another related
field. Advanced associate professors with the credentials for promotion
will also be considered. The position involves teaching advanced
undergraduate and graduate courses, developing and guiding collaborative
research activities, participating in the intellectual and creative
leadership of the Department, and attracting outstanding graduate students
and faculty to MFLL. In addition, the Shumway Chair will foster linkages
with other programs and centers in linguistics and related fields as a
means of creating opportunities for the professional development and growth
of our students and faculty.
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Romance Languages, French or Spanish, or
a related field, with primary teaching and research concentration in one or
more of the following areas: translation studies; dialectology; comparative
linguistics; sociolinguistics; or another related field. Native-level
competence in English and either French or Spanish. Candidates will have a
distinguished publication and teaching record in their field.
Preferred Qualifications: Linguistic and scholarly competencies that bridge
French and Spanish areas of overlapping interest are especially welcome, as
is a successful track record in obtaining external funds for research
and/or curriculum development. Professional expertise that will contribute
to the growth and development of some or all of the University's
interdisciplinary programs in Africana and Diaspora Studies, Cinema
Studies, Comparative Literatures, Global Studies, Latin American Studies,
Linguistics and Women's Studies. Scholarly and teaching interests that
extend beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries.
